Lisette CantonI am delighted to invite you, as Founder and Artistic Director, to subscribe to the Ottawa Bach Choir's tenth anniversary season. Just back from its Carnegie Hall debut in New York City, this world-class professional ensemble has performed to critical acclaim throughout the world. As the Choir expands in breadth, performances this season include a Subscription Series, an Intimate Concert Series and a new CD in honour of its 10th anniversary.

The Subscription Series offers three spectacular concerts:

Baroque Christmas, on November 26, 2011, includes festive works from the German and Italian baroque, featuring Schütz' masterpiece, Weihnachts-Historie, SWV 435, as well as other works by Praetorius, Gabrieli, and more. The choir is joined by a baroque ensemble playing on period instruments, including strings, sackbuts and cornets. A reception will follow the performance at which the OBC's new CD, Cantate Domino, in honour of its 10th anniversary, will be released.

To celebrate the choir's tenth anniversary, on March 10, 2012, Bach's Matthaüs-Passion (St. Matthew Passion), BWV 244, will be presented, which is the very work with which the Ottawa Bach Choir began in 2002. Joining the Choir will be an array of international stars, including Suzie Leblanc, Agnes Zsigovics, Daniel Taylor, Charles Daniels, Jacques-Olivier Chartier, Stephan McLeod and Daniel Lichti. A world-class baroque orchestra accompanies the choir and a celebratory reception follows the performance.

The final concert of the season, Song and Spirit, on May 12, 2012, performed in advance of the OBC's appearance at Podium 2012, includes Baroque and Contemporary works by such composers as Bach, Pachelbel, Whitacre, Pärt, and more, featuring a newly commissioned work by Ottawa composer, Nicholas Piper. A small continuo section accompanies the choir.

The Intimate Concert Series, featuring two smaller concerts with refreshments in the homes of our patrons, along with a number of Special Concerts at various embassies, round out the season.

We invite you to join us in this monumental year as we bring you the best that choral music has to offer.

You won't want to miss it!

Lisette Canton

It is my distinct pleasure, as Founder and Artistic Director, to invite you to subscribe to the Ottawa Bach Choir's eleventh spectacular season. Over the past ten years, the professional choir has performed throughout the world and been acclaimed on both the national and international levels. As the choir moves into its second decade after an amazing tenth anniversary, performances this season include a Subscription Series, an Intimate Concert Series and several Special Concerts.

The Subscription Series offers three magnificent concerts:

Ein deutsches Requiem (A German Requiem) by Johannes Brahms, will be presented on November 10. In addition to the version for orchestra, Brahms composed a chamber version for two pianos, and it is this version that will be performed. Along with this masterpiece,  two of the composer's a cappella motets will be included (Op. 74), as well as Bach's Lobet den Herrn, BWV 230. International soloists hailing from Ottawa include soprano Donna Brown and baritone Philippe Sly.

The second concert, Masters of the Renaissance, on March 2, includes a cappella works by two of the period's most important composers, Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina and Tomás Luis de Victoria. Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli (Pope Marcellus Mass), for six voices, composed in honour of Pope Marcellus II who reigned for three weeks, will be paired with Victoria's wonderful Lamentations of Jeremiah, composed for Holy Week. This concert is sure to inspire.

The final concert of the season, Baroque Magnificence, on May 4, includes majestic works by Bach, Handel and Charpentier. Bach's early cantata, Himmelskönig, sei willkommen, BWV 182, is peformed with Handel's early choral masterpiece, Dixit Dominus, and Charpentier's Exaudiat Pour le Roy. A superb baroque orchestra and soloists accompany the choir.

The Intimate Concert Series, featuring two smaller concerts with refreshments in the homes of our patrons, along with a number of Special Concerts round out the season.

We invite you to join us as we bring you the best that choral music has to offer. Don't miss it!
