Toronto-born baritone Alasdair Campbell’s musical life began at an early age when he joined the Choir at St James Anglican Cathedral in Toronto. Having just completed a licentiate in voice at McGill, Alasdair also holds a B.Sc. (Chemistry) from Carleton University. Alasdair has sung as a chorister with the Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal, Theatre of Early Music, Ensemble Meslanges, the Ottawa Bach Choir, Temps Fort, EVAQ, and the choir of the Church of St Andrew and St Paul in Montreal. Alasdair interpreted the role of Le Podestat in Bizet’s Le Docteur Miracle with Opera Inside Out in 2016. He performed as A Villager in Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci with SOPAC and as a member of the chorus in Harry Somers’s Louis Riel with the COC in 2017. Alasdair portrayed the Vicar in Britten’s Albert Herring at McGill in Fall 2018 and Papageno in Spring 2019, a role he reprised in a children’s version of the opera with Allegra Chamber Music. In 2019 he attended Against the Grain’s Summer Modern Intensive program. That fall he performed as baritone soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Durham Community Choir and in Haydn’s Paukenmesse with the Stewart Hall Singers. During the pandemic, choral recordings continued. In Spring 2021 he interpreted Il Cavaliere di Belfiore in the Canadian premiere of Verdi’s Un Giorno di Regno at McGill. In Fall 2021 he portrayed Halim with Chants Libres in the world premiere of Zad Moultaka’s L’Orangeraie. He looks forward to performing at Bachfest Leipzig 2022 with the Ottawa Bach Choir.
